For the second year, Gov. Charlie Crist has included in his budget more than $3 million for a statewide computer system that would allow judges to know if suspects standing before them in court are wanted elsewhere on unrelated charges.
“Governor Crist is recommending $3.7 million to enhance state courts’ information technology programs. The enhancements include a judicial arraignment calendar system to inform judges if a defendant appearing before the court has an active arrest warrant, ensuring they remain in custody pending a hearing, providing an extra measure of safety for the community,” the budget summary reads.
The budget item seeks three full-time employees to maintain the state-wide system. If approved, the system would represent about one-twentieth of one percent of the governor’s nearly $70 billion budget.
